Yangon (28 May 2017) – Yangon United may have been soundly defeated in their latest matchup, but they still sit atop the Myanmar National League standings.
In the MNL Max Cement week 15, Yadanarbon FC thrashed Yangon 3-0 on their home field. But despite losing they are still in first place with 36 points.
In a much-anticipated match of the Myanmar National League, longtime rivals Yadanarbon FC and Yangon United match was held in Mandalar Thiri Stadium on Saturday.
Yadanarbon used their young squad to full advantage in front of their loyal, boisterous fans. The visiting side had to field a team comprised of veterans and new players because five key players were sidelined by injuries.
Yadanarbon’s Aung Thu scored the opening goal at the 25-minute mark for the home side by sending midfielder Si Thu Aung. Si Thu Aung is a former member of Yangon United.
In the second half, Rene Oscar Desaeyere’s boys continued to dominate the match. Myo Ko Tun scored the second goal for Yadanarbon at the 63-minute mark by sending Patrick Asare.
Yangon United brought back Brazilian striker César Augusto Hermenegildo in the second-round transfer window of the Myanmar National League. But Hermenegildo, a former top goal scorer, struggled in this match. He got a number of chances but failed to convert any opportunities into goals. Hermenegildo was the top goal scorer in the MNL three years in a row, in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
But Hermenegildo was not the only player on his team to not take advantage of golden opportunities.
National Team Player and Yangon striker Kyaw Ko Ko also failed to score when he found himself one-on-one with Yadanarbon’s goal keeper. Kyaw Ko Ko’s kick was wide of the goal.
Yadanarbon’s summer signing of Nigerian striker Patrick Asare turned out to be a good move, Asare turned in his best performance of the season, assisting on the second goal and scoring the third and final goal at the 71-minute mark.
” Yadanarbon was eager to win. That’s why we won. I wanted to win for our fans. They come to every match to support our team”, Yadanarbon’ striker Aung Thu told MNL.
Yangon United’s defeat mars the unblemished record of coach Myo Min Tun, who had never lost an MNL match since he became Yangon United coach last year. He had also never lost against Yadanarbon. Yangon has earned only one point in its previous two games.
“It was a very competitive game. We lost to them. We have to wake up in the coming games. We can not make similar mistakes”, said Yangon United defender Zaw Min Tun.
In other action around the league, Magwe FC won 5-0 over Zwekapin United. Shan United also won over Southern Myanmar in an away match by the score of 2-0. With the win, Shan United remains in second place to first place Yangon.
Nay Pyi Taw won over GFA FC by a score of 1-0. The victory allows Nay Pyi Taw to climb up from the bottom of the standings to 10th place. Rakhine United also won over Chin United by the score of 1-0. Ayeyawady United and Hantharwady played to a 2-2 draw in Pathein Stadium.
After week 15 of the MNL Max Cement 2017 season, the top three spots are occupied by the same teams, but the point differences are now much closer. Yangon United remains in first place with 36 points, followed by Shan United with 35. Yadanarbon sits in third placed with 34 points.
